It is Cushing's Syndrome, Not Crushing's Syndrome!

A life as a human being is not an easy task, as with a tiny error of genetic or DNA, you or your descendant might be having a chance of suffering from some strange gene mutation or imbalanced hormone levels.

Does anyone here ever heard about "Cushing's Syndrome"? Honestly, I didn't even know this disorder, until I saw it happened on Eddie, the son of my best friend, Bernard two months ago...

Two months ago, I went to Bernard's home and dropped him a visit. It is supposed to be a happy reunion after a very long time (six years) but what I found out there is truly shocking and sadness news. The doctor had diagnosed Eddie, a four-year-old boy whose is supposed a very active and cute little buddy, as the rare Cushing's Syndrome patient.

For your information, Cushing's Syndrome or it's also known as Hypercortisolism is an endocrine disorder and it's caused by high levels of cortisol in the blood. The reason that I called it a rare syndrome, as it only happened to less than 10 every million people each year.

Cushing's Syndrome mostly affects those people who aged around 20 to 50, so Eddie was a poor child for being diagnosed by this disorder in such a young age! According to the doctor, the glucocorticoid hormones that being taken by Eddie is the main cause he is having the Cushing's Syndrome (Note: Eddie is also suffering from asthma since two-year-old and he needs the glucocorticol hormones to control it!)

For your information, cortisol is a hormone that released from the adrenal gland in response to ACTH, which it's being released from the pituitary gland. According to the previous research, Pituitary Adenomas is the most common cause of Cushing's Syndrome, where there are benign tumors of the pituitary gland that produces excessive amounts of ACTH.

Those common symptoms of Cushing's Syndrome are including:

  • Depression and anxiety
  • Acne
  • Muscle weakness
  • High blood pressure
  • Fatigue
  • Bones become weaker
  • Skin become thinner

Most of the Cushing's Syndrome patients were being treated by restoring a normal balance of hormones (This is the method where Eddie currently use), surgical removal of the tumor, radiation therapy or chemotherapy.

Eddie, I knew that it's not easy to overcome the painful of this disorder, but I want you to know here that no matter how hard it's going to be, you must always remember that Bernand, your father and your whole family will be fully supported you.

Lastly, I hope may god bless you, my little angel :)

I had no idea that this disease can hit toddlers. It is sad to hear and I pray he will be able to get through it soon.
